July Round-Up '26

Welcome to another edition of "What has Alix been up to?" in which I give personal updates, followed by projects I've been working on and a massive collection of super cool media that I gush about for what might be too long. There is a lot to talk about, so I'll get right to it - I hope you enjoy, and that you'll find something new to check out by the end of it! Thank you for being here!

Alix's Daily Life

This month was so busy and overwhelming it's hard to remember much of anything day to day... there were many difficult moments, for both myself and many people I care dearly for. I've been trying my best to keep it together no matter what life throws at me, and I'm grateful to be trusted by friends as a source of comfort when they've needed someone. To those who have reached out - we're gonna make it somehow, and I'm here for you.

Late July also marks six months since my life was turned upside down. The passage of time doesn't feel real, most days being almost dreamlike and hazy, and emotionally the pain persists with how forcefully I was denied closure. After I physically left Los Angeles, I was told I was "owed no explanation" and then blocked everywhere, despite my former partner having previously claimed to "want to keep supporting" me. Moving forward continues to be a big challenge because I genuinely can't comprehend why the kindness and support I continued to give afterward, and wish to simply understand why, was met with such hurtful treatment. Knowing that part of the impetus really was to leave me for someone else despite what I was told to my face has also been difficult to come to terms with.

And yet... We move.

Despite feeling more down than up, I'm grasping joyful moments and pushing myself to spread hope and happiness no matter what. I have two super fun roomies I get to go on adventures with, and I'm starting to make more friends out here in SLC. I have a few future plans that I'm especially excited about in the coming months to see people close to my heart who I've missed deeply. Making friends with more people online, connecting through my art or streams, has helped me keep holding on. I'm working really hard to get help for myself too, beyond talking things out with friends, even though there have been immense roadblocks to getting this. I won't give up though, and I'm striving to get to a place where I can smile and laugh even more heartily. I feel like I say this often, but thanks to everyone who has stayed beside me: you make a huge difference in my life.

Moving on to more lighthearted subjects, did you know... that Utah has a single theme park? And that it's actually very good?? We took advantage of the half-price July ticket special Lagoon was putting on and I had an utter blast!! Roller coasters are big favorites of mine (the more thrilling the BETTER!!), so trying new places like this makes me spectacularly gleeful. We went on so many cool things, but I think my favorite rides were Cannibal and Wicked! The dark rides Dracula's Castle and Terroride had terrifically spooky vibes, and Nutcracker was a huge swing ride that made me feel like I was going to be flung into the sun. Speaking of which - we went on a very hot day (most of July was in at least the 90's temperature-wise), so I sought out the single thing in the park that wouldn't destroy my tummy: a raspberry Dole Soft Serve - and that powered me through the day. I didn't get to ride everything, so I'd definitely like to go back and revisit my favorites plus more!!

At a crowded yet cozy little garage that acts as a popular venue for concerts, I attended the first rock concert I've been to since 2020. We went to see a band Cin loves - Stereosity - performing their new album, New Life Will Grow. This album's premise hits very close to home at this point in my life, presenting hopefulness and optimism in times where "you're expected to simply move on." This was very gratifying to hear and watch performed live, and watching each performer's fingers fly up and down their guitars was seriously amazing! We also saw a couple of other bands perform prior, including Stereosity's touring buddy Melancholy Club, which set the tone for a very screamo and rock-based sound. It was super nice to see a concert like this again. We also viewed the full "buck" moon that night, as named by Native Americans who would see young bucks with fully grown antlers this time of year!

My roomies and I celebrated Lunar Landing Day together! We looked up hopeful science-related news, I streamed Sonic Colors on Twitch, I cooked up some delicious burgers while Echo steamed tasty veggies, and we watched Project Hail Mary while we drank gleep glorp soda floats (I very much enjoyed the movie - it was WAY funnier than I expected - and love the themes of connection and friendship despite it all, plus the creature is too cute!).

  • I made some time for a couple solo trips this month, including going to several coffee shops by myself (usually to work), finding new eateries to explore, and journeying to Round 1 on my own to play games and eat at Dog Haus on free hot dog day. I'm the kind of person who prefers to share experiences with another person, but I think the time on my own has been helpful in some ways too. I can't help but think of my friends whenever I go out though, which often turns into bringing home a little treat from my adventures to share with my roomies!

    Projects

Thanks to a doodle stream I did earlier this week, I reached requirements for Vgen's verification process!! It said it may take up to two months to be seen since they have to manually approve each verification, but I'm hoping that this means I'll actually have the verification on there that I need sooner than later! I sincerely appreciate everyone's support toward that goal - if you'd like some art for yourself, my commissions are currently open! I have added "Simple Doodles" to my collection of offerings, but hopefully with verification I'll be able to offer even more soon!

Here's one of the Simple Doodles I did recently of a character named Kubo!

My friend Event Horizon released the song Gossamer Flutter (click to listen!) on her birthday, and I provided some art that I made especially pretty and sparkly in her honor!! Featured in the picture and via voice clips in the song is Castorice, who has appeared in a previous song, but we wanted to show her in one of her beautiful new outfits. Thank you so much for continuing to work with me Event!!

The DigiGirl Zine Volume 4 is releasing TOMORROW!! I've had some cuteness cooked up and ready to show off for a few months now! I'm still incredibly happy to be featured among other artists I love the works of and deeply respect... I hope you'll look forward to the full zine and the rest of my own piece!

I don't have anything to show for it publicly right now, but I made some art using watercolors for a local gallery that I'm hoping will be accepted! If not, it'll likely be put up for sale, so keep an eye out either way!

    NB-Coded Games Event

I had the humongous honor of being a partner streamer for the NB-Coded Games Festival! Many incredibly cool developers reached out to me tell me about their game's demo or giving me a full key to released ones, and I did what I could to fit all of them into four days of streaming on Twitch!! I was awestruck by how many good games were included in the event. Here's the social media banner I made, showing how I grouped everything into categories of similar kinds of games:

    ~ Gameplay Paradise ~

  • Micromega is a physics puzzle game with gorgeous hand-drawn 2D graphics and hidden object elements. I'm a huge lover of all those elements and was super impressed by this!!

  • Valkyrie Rising: Hordes of Ragnarok is a bullet heaven inspired by Norse mythology. I hadn't actually tried a game of this genre before and had a good time with it!

  • Combine typing game with a bullet hell and roguelite elements, and what do you get? HyperTyper 2000, which was entirely up my alley!! I'm looking forward to playing the full game at some point!

  • dirtbag MAHJONG's opening cutscene was so wild and wacky that it had me in stitches, VERY unhinged (which I love) and excellent character designs. It was also a fantastic refresher on Mahjong! I had fun relearning (well, properly learning) the game, I'll have to put more time into this one when I have energy!

  • Something that people probably don't know about me is that I enjoy FPS games, and I totally dug the ENTIRE aesthetic of Heavenstrafer!! It's super cool that the weapons all have alternate uses, such as one gun also being what's essentially a hook shot. I wasn't doing a great job showing it off onstream, but I absolutely want to play more - I already love what I've seen so far!!

  • Angel Clicker and Emblems: Sunless Vow are from the same developer with very different kinds of gameplay! Angel Clicker is a "number go up" clicker game - a genre which I'd never played before - and I enjoyed the simplicity of it!! The premise of a Heaven VS Hell pizza party is also so cute... I'd love to stream more of it some time! Emblems: Sunless Vow had a great concept - visual novel elements mixed with turn-based battles - and put a unique spin on them with how the "emblem" system works. I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays when fully released!

  • If you're in need of a chill, creative game, I would highly recommend Bombing!! A Graffiti Sandbox for a relaxed little experience! I can see myself picking this up whenever I want to do an art activity outside of the (sand)box. Hehe.

  • Scorchie Adventures is a precision platformer with very sweet art and a nice little soundtrack. I'd like to tackle more of the levels at some point!

    ~ Cute Critters ~

  • Like Pokemon Snap and cryptids (like me)? Then you'll likely love CryptidCam a swell take on the concept of capturing little guys on camera! Finding the elusive "pants" (AKA the Fresno Nightcrawlers) was a big highlight for me. I cherish the concept, and am looking forward to seeing more progress on this game as it's made!

  • If you know me, you know I loooooove hoptix!!! If you haven't played it, please do!! It's bunny time!!!!!!!

  • Mothkeep is one I'd like to stream in full! I love laid-back creature collectors in the way this presents it, plus I love the way it's also teaching you about the moths you capture! It reminds me of one of my favorite board games, Wingspan, in that way. Very pleasant!

  • I am VERY excited for Capy Castaway to fully release soon, I utterly adore what I've played so far!! I love the adventurous spirit the game is imbued with, the inherent cuteness of all the characters, and the shenanigans you can get up to with the capybara and crow. I'm super hyped to play the full game on its release!!

  • The Unlife of Gorlak is honestly one of my FAVORITE things I've played in recent memory!!! I loved the little bit I got during the NB-coded games fest, and had actually been recommended by my roomie Cin to play it even before LandSharkRAWR reached out with a code for the full game, so I continued my first playthrough on stream. Love, love, LOVE the art, the music, the writing, the way it plays out!! It really inspired me to check into making something with RPG Maker. I'm really glad this game exists!

  • Soulblaze is a creature-collecting roguelite with lovely art and a cool spin on the turn-based battle system presented in similarly-themed games! I liked what I played of it onstream!

  • I played the demo of Party On Hallow Grove and baby, I am ALL IN!!! The writing had me laughing so hard, I loved the spookycute vibes of it all, and I wanna see where the story goes! I'm saving playing the rest of this game for when Halloween hits!

  • Nekomancer of Nowhere is an engaging and adorable puzzle game! It's super cute that the protagonist speaks in smilies, and even though I could only show just a few levels onstream I want to play more!!

    ~ Story Time ~

  • DEVIL'S LIMINAL is a slowburn horror-romance, with such a pace that every moment made me feel like gripping the edge of my chair ever harder... Extremely cool art style, utilizing black and white and beautifully drawn portraits to carry the mood of each scene. I'm looking forward to finishing the story!

  • Murder Meet Cute is stylish and very delightfully offbeat in the way it presents its story! The hacking minigame really added a lot to the feel of the game, and I loved the fake pieces of media shown in the folders of different computer screens. The feel of the game totally brought me back to my teenage years with how the tech was presented! Definitely a game I'll be keeping an eye on!

  • Talewarden: Riders of the New Day had an impressive cast of characters - I think it said over 30 total?? - and a very neat style of world building!

  • I was going absolutely nuts over ShelfLife: Art School Detective's art and gameplay style! Very reminiscent of a combination of a bunch of my favorite games, such as Ace Attorney, and created something entirely fresh with it. Loved the writing, loved the presentation, loved it all!!

  • Battle Live! The Idol School Collection is actually fully out and free on Steam! Even if the subject wasn't something I tend to gravitate toward, I thought it was very cute and enjoyed seeing so much passion behind writing the story and characters! In the chapter I played, I appreciated that the characters warmed up to each other and gave each other encouragement.

    ~ Running Shops & More Stories ~

  • Burger Bois did an amazing job of balancing strategy with the fun of building outrageous burgers!!! I spent so much time thinking about each combination, which to me was incredibly engaging in a super fun way!! I'm looking forward to indulging in the full game upon release!

  • I think the way Gas Station Story is incredibly cool and clever, and the fact that the devs used an actual GameBoy Camera to make the art for it is awesome!! I also appreciate that a version of the game is actually playable on a GameBoy! Loved the shakeup of gameplay as you progress the story; I enjoyed the little bit I played, and want to finish it sometime.

  • I'm Making a Monster and Quality Dreams, Reasonably Priced are both gorgeous games by the same dev team! I only played the demos for both, but I'm highly interested in playing the full games. I'm Making a Monster hit home for me pretty fast, has lavishly painted backgrounds and character art, and presents its story in a way that pulls no punches. Quality Dreams, Reasonably Priced immediately pulled me into its world with how it presented its various options and directed the flows of conversation... plus, who wouldn't put it all on the line for their pet bunny? Aw yes.

  • I only played the first five days so far, but I loooove the pace of Dungeon Bodega Simulator! This is a game I felt like I could come back to over and over again to progress a bit at a time, the daily cycle wasn't too overwhelming and I found the dialogue and world incredibly charming. I LOVE that you have your own bodega cat to pet!!

    Video Games

  • SGDQ kicked off in early July, though there weren't actually a whole lot of runs I was specifically interested in... I still need to check into the Kuon run, which is awesome that they featured that game at all, enjoyed the silliness of Mr. Bones. Seeing the co-op run of Wind Waker after having finished that so recently was neat. My absolute favorite run - and the one I made sure I watched live - was Hey You Pikachu! and I'm SO glad I made the time for it because it was so bonkers. Finding out you lose time loving on Pikachu instead of insulting him is hilarious, and "a" has been stuck in my head for weeks.

mfw you call me "electric rat"

  • I finished Bomb Rush CyberFunk and gosh, I adored it start to finish... it's totally perfect for summer evenings spent with friends. Filled to the brim with style and an extraordinary soundtrack, each level was eye candy visually and the character designs are sooo rad! The gameplay itself was easy to pick up and play even with a few days between play sessions, and so smooth that it makes me wanna continue existing by playing in the world even now. I'll be returning to it over time to rack up points just for funsies.

  • Playing the ultra-slick and freshly released Denshattack is exactly what I wanted immediately after completing Bomb Rush - more style, more skatey, more SEGA-esque action, more fantastic music!!! I'm only maybe a quarter of the way into the game, but the vibes are off the CHARTS good! I'm loving my time with this silly yet superb title, and if you haven't already boarded the hype train for this game, I highly recommend checking it out!!

  • I streamed the entirety of Detective Pikachu Returns and loved getting to revisit the story! A surprising amount of my audience hadn't played this game - or the original Detective Pikachu on 3DS - so I was very happy to share what I consider a far-too overlooked little mystery game. My favorite aspect remains the Pokemon interactions; hearing the nicknames they give their human partners, seeing each Pokemon's personality, and simply getting to interact with the world as Pikachu was just too fun.

  • At the immense glee of my roomie Cin, I've started a game that I've been meaning to give a try for years: Viva Pinata (technically the definitive version of the game, called "Trouble in Paradise")! Honestly, I'm surprised it took me so long to get around to it?? I wasn't expecting a farm and animal simulator combined with animal dress-up game, and even moreso I didn't expect each species of pinata to have their own special "romance dance..." I absolutely MUST view every cute little dance that these critters have cooking up in their miniature houses. This game has a difficulty spike that slapped me out of nowhere, which was horrifying in the moment, but thankfully it's very easy to rebuild after any kind of tragedies strike your garden. I think above all, the most surprising aspect of this game has been how freaky the "human" characters look (you can Google that if you dare). Thanks so much to Cin for acting as my guide through this game, I'm genuinely loving it!

My special boy, Beanbo, got him big boots on!!!!!

  • I didn't play it myself, but I had the joy of watching my roomie Echo play through much of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon! They actually 100%'d the game, S-ranking every mission and getting every ending, which is highly impressive!! I'm a longtime fan of the series and it seems like this one is especially exciting to play. With how overwhelmed I've been this month I didn't take up the offer to give it a try yet, but I'd love to play it myself in the future.

    Anime

  • Goodbye Lara's entire first episode had me in a chokehold. Piano and strings carry the mood of each moment to moment, while the story builds in emotional beats and enchanting palettes of deep reds and blues, all with stunning art direction. I rewatched it several times to soak it all in - this is no mere retelling of The Little Mermaid, but a story wrought with further complexity, further emotion, and magic both magnificent and mundane! It questions what "true love" could look like, and as someone going through intense heartbreak, it's been a bit difficult sometimes... but I'm enjoying it very much with how earnestly it presents itself! Being so sweet and funny makes this a show that's easy to look forward to each week.

  • Speaking of gripping... each week I feel like I have my head in my hands by the end of the newest Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia. Science Saru, one of my most favorite animation studios, tackles difficult topics and shows cultures not often seen in mediums such as this. Following Sitara (using the alias "Fatima" later on), her tale of desperation and spite is one that I can't look away from. The character designs are deceptively cute, as much tragedy happens, and gosh does it look pretty as it does thanks to the show's artistry... It's also refreshing to have media that doesn't flat out demonize Muslims, and instead shows what seems to be a very well researched look at what life was like for Persian slaves during the 13th century under the Great Khan's rule. It's very good!!

  • We're eating super good this season with TWO new Science Saru shows airing at once!! The Ghost in the Shell adapts the classic manga in a beautiful way, with techniques and onscreen effects giving each frame a "retro" look and feel. The expressions are bombastic, the soundtrack an utter BANGER that I can't wait to listen to out of context, and I can't help but dance wildly to the opening theme. I've heard people have mixed opinions so far, but I'm personally having a great time with this version of the show and characters overall!

this version of the fuchikoma is sooooo cuuuuute

  • Every episode of The World is Dancing leave me extremely awed by how phenomenal the animation is! The tone for each episode varies wildly, with humor sprinkled throughout that I never expect, only to be slapped out of NO WHERE with some heavily emotional scene. The changes in artistic medium to capture motion and form emphasizes the "good"-ness of dance that protagonist Oniyasha desperately searches for. I'm interested in seeing how this show finishes.

  • I'm continuing to keep up with Daemons of the Shadow Realm, which continues to be good!! Arakawa slipping little references to her other work Fullmetal Alchemist is a delight to see every time, and I love how creative a lot of the demons' designs and attack styles are. The only gripe I have thus far is wishing Asa had a little more personality beyond loving her bro... but we'll see where things end up.

behold: my favorite of the daemons in this show

  • The Cat and the Dragon is an anime that combines two of my favorite things ever - dragons and cats (aka my vtubey hehe) - but the best part is that this anime is written in a way that feels like a fairytale each episode!! The way they structure the show continues to be interesting and fresh beyond the initial premise, all while being entirely adorable without feeling saccharine. I come away feeling happy every time I watch this.

  • As a Summertime treat, I'm sharing one of my favorite spooky shows ever with my roommates: The Summer Hikaru Died!! The anime adaptation cranks up the unsettling vibes, using sound to create atmosphere and a variety of color palettes to set moods that oftentimes contain multifaceted emotions. I like the way they use humor to create levity amidst all the peril as well. I'm really glad that my roomies have been enjoying this one too!

    Movies

  • Avatar Aang the Last Airbender was stunningly animated, utilizing a thin-brushed style for the characters and sweeping, painterly backgrounds; absolute eye candy! The story had an interesting premise but felt like it didn't give quite enough attention to characters we've already come to love from the original series, putting more of a focus on beautifully choreographed fight scenes than dialogue. I think that it still worked in this context, and made for a good movie to wind down with the day we got back from Lagoon!

  • I enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada 2 a lot more than I initially expected to, but I also went in with pretty low expectations despite enjoying the first movie well enough. Dealing with the struggles of staying relevant as a company who produces a hand-crafted piece of art in a world that simply wants to consume is a plot all too relatable to me, so maybe that helped me connect better. I think shoving a love interest into the movie felt really out of place when the main character had so much other stuff she was already striving toward, but otherwise the movie was decent overall. I also liked seeing all the modern fashion, and was happy Lady Gaga was inexplicably there. Probably not one I'd rewatch anytime soon, but if you liked the first film I think you'd probably like this one.

  • I guess people took the first rule of Fight Club seriously ("You do not talk about Fight Club") because I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from this movie, other than having heard it's "very good." Not to be contrarian, but I thought it was simply okay? Like I did immediately understand the themes of the movie being a critique of consumer culture and that capitalism destroys society, and enjoyed the creative cinematography to further imply certain things about the story, but it wasn't something I'd be interested in returning to anytime soon.

    August sure is here, huh?

This is going to be a crazy busy month, like even MORE than this one was. I'm planning to do a neat little game jam with one of my friends starting tomorrow that I'm hoping I can maintain energy for, going on an out of town trip for my own pleasure for the first time in like... ten years?? And of course, continuing to stream!

There's a lot I want to do... reclaim my creativity, work on some very important personal projects, and start journaling again, too. I've been in over my head trying to get used to my new surroundings for the past few months that I've barely had time for myself aside from snippets of solo time, though I don't view that as a bad thing. I'm grateful for any moments spent with people I care about, so thank you for sharing even a small portion of your time with me.

I'm going to keep going. I have to, but also I want to create again. I desire to make what I wish to see in the world, to bring more kindness into it through my own means.

Through tooth and claw, I will continue loving abundantly. Thank you to those of you who read all of this, I hope you've gleaned a cool new thing to check out! Please let me know what you think, I'd truly love to hear.

    sleepy kitty sketch for you
